THE DAY OF ST GEORGE
exhibition opening Sunday April 23, 2005. 4:00 PM to 10:30 PM
Traditional George and Dragon Buffet Tea Table from 4:00PM
For his exhibition in White Cubicle Gontarski will present a pencil and metallic pen drawing, done directly on the wall of Jonjo Jury Andrews, better known as Jonjo, one of the George and Dragon djs. With this Gontarski continues his investigation on the romantic mythification of youth heroes.
Gontarski was born in the USA where he lived until he moved to London to study in Goldsmiths in1996. In London he won international acclaim for his sculptures: amorphous, fluid forms that were executed in fiberglass in rich, luxurious colours; with its brilliant gloss finish, the viewer's gaze was both reflected and deflected by the mirror-like surface in the material, their soft bodies elongated and sublimated to create reduced and sexually charged sculptures.
Steven Gontarski is an artist who deals primarily with the human figure. His most recent works depict fantastical characters - prophets and modern day youth heroes from his own personal mythology: a sleek, elegant and fetishised aesthetic that borrows from both Classical sculpture and the flamboyant excess of Baroque as much as from underground music and alternative youth subcultures of the 1980's with an inclination for a reinterpretation of neo-romantic, and neo-gothic themes.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1972), Steven Gontanski studied BA Architectural Studies/Visual Art at Brown University (Rhode Island USA 1994) and MA Fine Art, Goldsmiths College, (London 1997). Group exhibitions include Material World, Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art (Glasgow 2006), Sixty Years of Sculpture in the Arts Council Collection, Longside Gallery, (Yorkshire Sculpture Park 2006) and The Future Lasts a Long Time, Le Consortium, (Dijon 2005). Solo Shows have included Steven Gontarski, pkm Gallery (Seoul 2006), The Visitors, Groniger Museum (Groningen, 2005) and December Morning Prophecy, White Cube, (London 2004).
